The goal of “Sponge” is the creation of a porose barrier between neighborhoods and railway. But first of all a place for people, a field where people (from three to much more feet tall) can feel themselves protected and discover new emotions and feelings in living spaces. The idea is to determine an opportunity inside the thickness of the edge. An opportunity of life, a community where people can enjoy their life inside the nature. Actually trees are the main filter between the tracks and the building, working against pollution and noise.
The overall shape is articulate to react to the city influence and to the railway’s noise, but mainly to define a nice garden-like space. In a way it is an evolution of the great historical castle concept, it is a sort of protection but at the same time an open and adaptable. The small (27m high) towers are really important to create a skyline in direct dialogue with the context.
The double layers plate is fundamental to link the new city site with the existing fragmented tissue. And again, the shape has the important issue of embrace and protect the meaningful Water Tank, creating a plaza around it, as a symbol of the site. The idea is also to extend the green soft hilly-path including on it the abandoned trucks transforming them in a really nice park where people can play and stay with their families.
